Discourses of Suffering

HERBERT, Edward, Baron of Cherbury.

1649

Folio.

Herbert’s account of the reign of King Henry VIII focuses on his need for a male heir and his relationship with Anne Boleyn, giving a frank portrayal of his despotic and violent nature.

One the one hand, this work is limited by the sources available to Herbert at the time, while on the other it draws on sources that are no longer extant.
