A very interesting and timely reflection on something that many academics don’t want to talk about – I suspect the fact is that most academics are embarrassed that they use EEBO and have not (in many cases) consulted the original books; however, the bibliographical data provided by EEBO (including RSTC nos) allows you to reference books as if you have consulted them in physical form. I’m not sure there’s anything wrong with the latter, but historians failing to acknowledge EEBO at all may be slowing down the progress of the digital humanities and could be seen as unfair to those who work in that area – as if they are a ‘dirty secret’ of the world of early modern studies.
